What We Do
The Constructive Conversations Lab (CCL) studies how the Kim Constructive Conversations (KCC) model—a skill-based, eight-step approach—helps people navigate difficult conversations by fostering understanding and reducing conflict. We examine key factors of effective dialogue, including articulating goals, recognizing communication barriers, grounding in values, practicing deep listening, cultivating empathy, and finding common ground. Our work spans diverse contexts, including psychotherapy, supervision, higher education, and organizational settings. To this end, we test conversation models, identify their ideal uses, and create practical tools such as personalized scripts and facilitation guides that help clinicians, supervisors, educators, and organizational leaders apply the research in practice.
CCL aims to strengthen relationships, promote psychological safety, and foster more collaborative learning communities and workplace cultures.
Current Projects
Supervisor & Faculty Learning Community Study: Supporting Difficult Conversations in Training and Teaching
Our current projects explore the effectiveness of the Kim Constructive Conversations (KCC) model in helping supervisors and faculty navigate challenging conversations in supervision and in the classroom with greater confidence, empathy, and impact. Our research examines how structured training in an extended group setting helps supervisors and faculty address power, identity, feedback, and emotional dynamics more constructively and collaboratively with their trainees and students. Participants will attend interactive workshops and monthly check-ins and complete assessments throughout a 3-4 month engagement. The findings will contribute to the development of more inclusive, relationally attuned, and effective training and teaching practices in clinical and educational settings.
